A Remarkable Week at the United Cup in Perth
Dr Barr's Week at the United Cup in Perth
January 1, 2025
What an incredible week it has been working at the United Cup in Perth! I had the privilege of contributing to this world-class tennis event as part of the tournament’s medical team, alongside renowned sports physician Dr. Simon Jenkins and the skilled physiotherapists for both the WTA and ATP tours. The experience was not only rewarding but also a great opportunity to work with some of the most talented athletes in the world.

A Unique Medical Team at a Premier Event
At the heart of any successful sports event is a dedicated medical team, and the United Cup was no exception. As a tournament doctor, my role was to oversee the athletes' medical care, manage any acute injuries, and ensure their physical well-being throughout the competition. The collaboration with Dr. Simon Jenkins, a leader in sports medicine, was invaluable. His deep understanding of sports-related injuries, combined with his commitment to optimising athlete performance, made for an effective and efficient team dynamic.
Working alongside the physios of the WTA and ATP was also an incredible experience. Together, we were able to address player injuries, implement tailored recovery plans, and provide on-the-spot medical support to ensure that the athletes remained fit and ready to compete. It was a true team effort, where each of us brought our own area of expertise to the table.
The Role of the WTA/ATP Physios
In addition to working with Dr. Jenkins, I had the pleasure of collaborating with the dedicated physiotherapists for the WTA and ATP tours. These physios are experts at providing injury prevention techniques, recovery strategies, and hands-on treatments for players who are constantly pushing their bodies to the limit.
One of the most rewarding aspects of working with the physio teams was seeing how proactive and personalised the care was. The physios were constantly monitoring players for any signs of strain or injury, offering tailored treatments that ranged from manual therapy to sport-specific rehabilitation exercises. As a team, we were able to implement an integrated approach to player care that prioritised both short-term recovery and long-term injury prevention.
High-Energy Atmosphere at the United Cup
The United Cup is a unique and high-energy event that brings together both male and female tennis players in an exciting and competitive format. The level of play is always intense, and as a medical team, we had to stay on our toes to provide the best care possible in a fast-paced environment.
From managing minor sprains and strains to addressing more significant injuries, the week was a reminder of the demands that professional athletes face. Despite the physical strain, the players’ resilience and determination were remarkable. Being able to provide them with the support they needed to continue competing at such a high level was incredibly fulfilling.
Key Takeaways from the Week
Reflecting on the week, there are a few key takeaways that I will carry forward in my practice:
- Collaboration is Key – Working alongside experts like Dr. Simon Jenkins and the ATP/WTA physios reinforced the importance of teamwork. Each member of the medical team played a vital role, and our collective efforts ensured the athletes received the best care possible.
- Early Intervention Matters – The importance of early detection and intervention in preventing injuries cannot be overstated. By providing quick, effective treatment, we were able to prevent several minor injuries from turning into long-term issues.
- Individualised Care is Crucial – Every athlete is unique, and their recovery and treatment plans need to be tailored accordingly. It was great to see the personalised care that was provided to each player, helping them perform at their best while minimising injury risk.
Looking Forward
The United Cup was a fantastic experience that reinforced the critical role sports medicine plays in the success of elite athletes. I’m grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with such an amazing team and to contribute to the success of the event.
Thank you to Dr. Simon Jenkins, the WTA and ATP physios, and all the athletes for making this week a truly unforgettable experience. I look forward to continuing to work with such passionate and skilled professionals, and I can’t wait for what the future holds in sports medicine!
Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, take care of your body – it’s your greatest asset!
